  • Where: Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship
2330 San Juan Ave., Port Townsend, WA

The most famous of all Buddhist scriptures, the Heart Sutra has inspired, puzzled, and illumined countless generations of practitioners.

Form is emptiness.
Emptiness is form.
Emptiness is not other than form.
Form is not other than emptiness.

The Heart Sutra brings us directly into the very quality that makes a life of compassion possible, namely, the perfection of wisdom. Bill Porter and Ken McLeod, two of the great Buddhist translators, will explore the challenges of bringing this ancient text into modern culture.

Join us for an experiential journey into the mysteries of the perfection of wisdom, into the central teaching of the Heart Sutra — anything is possible.

Bill Porter (Red Pine) is an acclaimed translator and interpreter of Chinese and Sanskrit texts including the Heart Sutra, Diamond Sutra, and Platform Sutra. His translation and commentary on the Heart Sutra "is a meticulous line-by-line interpretation that will radically deepen readers' understanding of not only the sutra but also Buddhism's underlying structure." (review in Booklist)

Ken McLeod, a senior Western teacher of Buddhism, is also one of the most innovative. Formerly a translator for Kalu Rinpoche and other Tibetan Buddhist lamas, Ken consistently goes beyond standard terminology to express the essence of Buddha's teachings in clear, precise, contemporary English. An Arrow to the Heart is KenŐs recently published commentary on the Heart Sutra.
